The cultural work codes in Brazil

Friendliness ! This is without doubt the term that best summarises human relations in Brazil, whether personal or professional. So much so that it is sometimes difficult, in a work context, to differentiate genuine interest from an expression of enthusiasm linked to this philosophy of life.

Another manifestation of this warm side - in Brazil, people greet each other by kissing, whether in a private or professional context. The way you kiss depends on the region you are in - in São Paulo, they kiss once, in Rio de Janeiro twice, and three times in some places.

To get by in Brazil, it is not absolutely necessary to speak good Portuguese. Brazil is a very multicultural country :  there are many English speakers and in the business context, English is commonly used.

You will soon realise that Brazilians are not very strict about punctuality. Similarly, the most valued qualities in life and at work will be your resourcefulness and creativity rather than extreme rigour.

Things that may surprise you in Brazil

- Punctuality and Brazilians is two different things - you have a meeting with friends at 8pm ? Understand that you are expected from 8pm onwards. Even worse if you plan to go to a barbecue : 12 noon means 1pm. If you arrive before, no one will be prepared for you and the meal will be nowhere near ready. For medical appointments, be aware that being 15 minutes late is acceptable. In short, in Brazil people don’t get too stressed out over timing.

- Brazil is a noisy country. Its inhabitants speak loudly everywhere - whether in restaurants, on the streets, in parks or even at work.

- In a bar, you will discover the concept of the individual bill - each guest receives a chit that summarises their order and they settle their own bill at the end of the evening. It is also very common to ask for "saideira” - this is a free beer offered by the waiter and/or the bar when people have consumed a lot in the establishment.

- Did you know ? In Brazil, avocados are eaten sweet, either as a juice or as a dessert. It is very strange for Brazilians to eat it as a savoury dish !

- Another local feature is that Brazilians do not throw toilet paper in the toilets, but always in the bin to avoid clogging the toilets.

- Family is very important in Brazil and all ages mix at a party or evening. So don't be surprised to see parents or grandparents at teenage parties.

- Familiarise yourself with "jeitinho” - this is the Brazilian way of solving problems by finding a creative way out, sometimes by stretching social rules and conventions. It is practised every day by everyone because it is a proof of resourcefulness and a way of achieving your goal come what may. This means, for example, using emotional arguments to obtain a favour, a pass or sometimes simply... a free drink.
