Cultural work codes in Australia

When you arrive in Australia, you will no doubt be surprised by the very informal nature of professional relations. Here everyone speaks, and exchanges are direct and spontaneous, managerial relations are generally relaxed. Be careful, this does not mean that respect for management is not important, the working atmosphere is simply quite “casual”.

Moreover, you can expect the boundaries between professional and private life to be blurred as you get to know your colleagues. A trip to the pub as a team on Friday evening, a barbecue at your colleague’s place on the weekend or the company’s highly anticipated “Christmas Party”... all opportunities to leave behind the office atmosphere. Do not see this as a lack of professionalism but rather a way of balancing private and professional life.

It is, of course, also a way of encouraging team spirit, a central value to Australian culture, which is reflected as much in the taste for team sports as in open space offices. Team spirit necessarily means a sense of responsibility, solidarity and self-discipline. As a result, in terms of the skills that are valued, communication and good contacts are as important or even more important than training and experience. Finally, in problem solving, Australians generally adopt a pragmatic and experiential approach (test and learn) rather than being guided by intellectualization and planning.

Things that may surprise you in Australia

- Australia is an island continent ! 14 times the size of France, the country has 6 States, 2 territories and 3 time zones. This feeling of immensity is reinforced by the low density and urban concentration of the population. Thus, Sydney and Melbourne together account for 40% of the country's population, while some areas are almost deserted.

- Australia is highly multicultural, with more than 200 origins and 60% of its population growth is the result of immigration.

- The weather is good ! It is warm almost all year round. In reality, there are three very contrasting climates : tropical to the North, continental-desert in the centre and temperate in the South. This is also what makes the variety and richness of the landscapes that you can admire in the country's natural parks.

- If you like animals, you are in the right place! Kangaroos, wombats, koalas, emus, parakeets, Tasmanian devils, whales, dolphins... You will surely discover species that you did not know existed.

- Sport is a form of religion in Australia. National sports include rugby, cricket and surfing. People watch them, talk about them, practice them - in short, it may be an opportunity to get involved !

- Australia is moreover a true surfer's paradise with its dream beaches, the weather and the quality of its waves. Byron Bay, Tea Tree Bay, Gold Coast: so many surfing spots, sometimes unknown to tourists, where you can have an adventure. No wonder the biggest brands in the surfing industry originally came from Australia : Rip Curl, Billabong and Quicksilver.

- Australians are very relaxed and non-confrontational. The notion of “mateship” perfectly captures Australia’s cardinal values: equality, loyalty and friendship.  So as not to stand out, be relaxed, unstressed and warm in your interactions.

- Gourmets will be happy in Australia! Very good wines, international cuisine and fusion, a coffee culture that no longer needs to prove itself... As you can see, the food scene sounds great there!

- Did you know ? These celebrities come from Australia: Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman and Cate Blanchett. On the music side, there is of course Kylie Minogue for pop music, but also bands AC/DC and Jet..
