Cultural work codes in Turkey
The way Turkish businessmen and women operate is very similar to that of Europeans. For example, there is nothing surprising about a woman having a key position in a company. Nevertheless, there are some cultural specificities - such as the hierarchical relationship or the relationship to time - that may surprise you.
The boundary between business, private life and social life is thin so keep in mind that networks are important. Be responsive when it comes to answering professional questions but take the time to share pleasant moments with your counterparts. Do not neglect the emotional aspect - you will be welcomed in Turkey if you allow an atmosphere of trust to develop.
Do not forget that Turks are proud of their history and their country, which they are keen to share with foreign visitors. Unless you have been invited to do so by the person you are talking to, avoid taking positions on sensitive or emotional political subjects.
Things that may surprise you in Turkey
- Turkey is a formidable crucible of culture and influences, shaped by the various civilisations that have passed through it. This rich heritage is particularly present in gastronomy, which is extremely varied and famous. There are many Mediterranean, Eastern and Balkan influences. In short, Turkish cuisine is certainly not limited to döner kebabs !
- The historic heart of the country and a megalopolis of 15 million inhabitants, Istanbul is an extremely modern and vibrant city, where the streets are crowded and festive. In just fifteen minutes by boat on the Bosphorus, you can go from hipster and trendy neighbourhoods to business districts or more traditional areas.
- Turks are warm and welcoming and at the same time a highly diverse people. This mosaic can be clearly seen in the many neighbourhoods of Istanbul that oscillate between East and West. From trendy bar terraces to bazaars, there is no shortage of contrasts !
- Another beautiful surprise is the great diversity of the landscapes and the wealth of history! Relax on paradisiacal beaches surmounted by Greek ruins, go skiing two hours from Istanbul, walk through the tea fields to the east or venture among the Fairy Chimneys of Cappadocia. And, of course, accompanied by local culinary specialities and a glass of raki (the national alcohol) !
- One final point - football is the national sport and all Turks support a team. So, after some time spent in the country, you will also have to choose !
