Cultural work codes in Taiwan

Taiwanese society is one of Asia’s most advanced democracies. It is organized around a number of values such as respect, honesty, tolerance, obeying rules, whether written or not. If you follow these codes, you will fit in very well and have a very pleasant stay.

Taiwanese work culture is a fascinating mix of notions from Eastern thought - such as respect for face, the importance of the network and the search for compromise - but also American-style pragmatism. As a result, you will not necessarily be disorientated relative to your experience of the West.

The Taiwanese are very welcoming and friendly and will put you at your ease and introduce you to local life. To ensure optimum interactions once you are there, download the "Line" smartphone app, which is both the social network and the most widely used work tool in Taiwan.

In conversations, feel free to sincerely compliment your counterparts on the beauty of their country, their culture and their gastronomy. Note : it is better to avoid talking about Taiwan's status vis-à-vis China and in particular to make amalgams between the two populations. This is a sensitive subject that can divide and generate tensions, even within the Taiwanese population.

Things that may surprise you in Taiwan

- A striking blend of Asian and Western cultures, Taiwan is a country where it is good to live for an expatriate but which remains quite disorienting. Walking through the streets of Taipei, you're surprised by the juxtaposition of huge buildings, neighbourhood temples and tiny stalls, urban jungle and lush vegetation, major department stores and small local craft shops. In short, there's no shortage of contrasts !

- While working hours are similar to those in Europe, mealtimes can surprise some Westerners - restaurants are often full at 6 p.m., which is normal dinner time. Note that few Taiwanese cook - restaurants are cheap and it's very common to eat a "biandang" (Taiwanese bento) at work before napping on your computer keyboard. During the Chinese New Year, in addition to traditional red envelopes containing money, Taiwanese often offer gifts of food. So prepare your stomachs because you'll be snacking all day !

- You'll also have to get used to the queues that you will encounter on every street corner. "Queuing" must be a Taiwanese way of life! Hyperconnected, crazy for social media and the latest trends, the Taiwanese are very trendy. Fashions are created and uncreated at an impressive pace ! As a result, it is not uncommon to wait three hours to discover the latest fashionable coffee.

- Do not hesitate for a second to use taxis - you can take one with your eyes closed. They are everywhere, inexpensive and taxi drivers are scrupulously honest. They may even lower the price of the ride if they make an error or encounter unexpected congestion.

- So go and visit the night-time food markets and let yourself be tempted by Taiwanese street food ! There is no shortage of specialities - the famous "stinky tofu", "pork pepper buns", onion and radish pancakes and beef noodle soup. To wash it all down go for a beer or tea.  Did you know that bubble tea originated in Taiwan ? For those who haven’t heard of it, it's a drink made from black tea with milk, served cold with tapioca.

- Taiwanese society is one of the safest in the world, even if the Taiwanese often say they don’t feel safe. Theft is almost absent and crimes are very rare.

- Finally, Taiwan is not a country for people with agoraphobia ! Taipei and other cities in the country have a very high population density, especially due to the landscape. There are crowds everywhere, any time of day or night. As for the notion of personal space, in Asia it is not the same as in the West. The Taiwanese metro at peak times will impress you by its density of users per square meter.
