The cultural work codes in Mexico

Mexico is a country that has a number of economic, social and political contradictions. This is why they say that in Mexico, everything is possible “En México todo es posible” ! An expression that sums up how things really are, in both the personal sphere and the professional world.

The economic system is very close to American capitalism. This is reflected in the flexibility of working hours, the high level of business activity, sometimes open 24/7 and the ease of obtaining loans. But also in the high degree of professional competition that prevails in many industries. This is due in particular to the large expatriate community, attracted by the country’s openness and multilateralism.

While the business community is characterized by the importance of contact and sociability, it is essential to remember the significance of hierarchy in Mexican societies. To show your respect, always remember to use the correct university qualification for the person you are talking to (licenciado, maestro, ingeniero).

Things that may surprise you in Mexico

- Welcome to the land of tacos ! This is an opportunity for you to test your resistance to spicy food. A word of advice, drinking water won't help, instead eat something to calm your taste buds. But Mexican cuisine is not all about spice ! The country's gastronomy is known for its variety, flavours and exotic products. Throughout the year, you'll find large quantities of delicious fruits to start the day off on a high note or finish a hearty meal. And don’t forget to accompany your meal with a good tequila. Salud !

- Discover a very special sport : “La lucha libre”. Come and admire masked men and women wrestling, dancing, fighting and winning. The audience also takes part, as they are both spectators and judges. Even if you're not into sports, it's worth a visit. Outfits are colourful and bright and the scenarios are full of suspense. In short, there is plenty of atmosphere !

- Mexico has a very rich pre-Hispanic and colonial culture that you can discover by exploring the country. There are many Mexican customs and traditional festivals. The best known must be “The Day of the Dead” - “Dia de Muertos” - which dates back over 3,000 years and takes place on 31st October and 1st November. This popular and holy festival is celebrated very differently from one region to another, between joy and solemnity, prayer and dance. The decorations, that are often floral, combine paper cut-outs and sugar skulls.

- Although Mexico's beaches invite rest and relaxation, it would be a shame to miss out on the cultural richness of the country. Art and history lovers are well served ! As you wander through the country, you will come across numerous Aztec and Mayan ruins. In Mexico City, art is omnipresent with almost 170 museums and 43 art galleries. Finally, it is not possible to talk about Mexico without mentioning the legendary artist Frida Kahlo ! While you are in Mexico City you must visit the Casa Azul, her home that inspired so much of her work... and was the place of her tumultuous relationship with painter Diego Rivera.

- Mysterious and fascinating, the indigenous pre-Columbian civilization of the Zapotecs is still alive and well in Mexico. The Zapotec people now live mainly in the Oaxaca Valley engaged in agricultural activities - growing corn, sugar cane or guava - and crafts - pottery, weaving rugs and colourful clothing. Between the breathtaking landscapes, the hair-raising “mezcal” and the warmth of the inhabitants, this is a region worth visiting !

- Tightly fitting black trousers embroidered with gold or silver, short jacket, bouffant necktie, sombrero and high-heeled boots... This is the unmistakable uniform of the Mariachis ! You can't miss these groups of musicians with their guitars, violins and trumpets, so beloved of Mexicans. Mariachi songs evoke the love of the land, the home country, birthplace, religion, nature, compatriots and the strength of the country. Did you know that their music was recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2011 ?
