Cultural work codes in Chile

Sometimes referred to as the British of South America, Chileans are generally more reserved than their neighbours. They are nevertheless welcoming and cordial. Quite tactile, they will tend to give you a hug or, for women, a kiss. So don't worry about these physical demonstrations ! Similarly, first names are very common in Chile, in both personal and business contexts.  

For business meetings, a good command of Spanish will be very useful and, in some cases, even essential. Expect the first few minutes of an exchange to begin informally, around topics such as family, Chile, your country or your hobbies. It is only after this first step that you will move on to what is essential.   

Unlike other Latin American countries, punctuality is important in Chile. Don't play with fire too much - being too late will not be appreciated by your counterparts. In so far as concerns communication, Chileans do not like conflict, they would rather not answer you than say no. Learn how to interpret understatements. Finally, prefer face-to-face contacts rather than e-mails Relationships are very important in this country. Nevertheless, Whatsapp is becoming more and more widely used in business relationships.

- You may find the disparities of the metropolitan region of Santiago, like other regions in Chile, surprising, with its very modern districts -Sanhattan- a mixture of Santiago and Manhattan - and its more underprivileged neighbourhoods.

- Yes, Chilean bureaucracy can be cumbersome, especially when you arrive in the country or when it comes to visas. However, you will find that the services - public transport, telecommunications, etc. work quite well. Santiago is, for example, very well served by the metro, which is a safe and simple means of transport. But you can also easily use Uber or Cabify services. 

- In your conversations with locals, avoid sensitive topics such as personal judgements about religion, politics or events related to the dictatorship.
