Since 2013, Romania has seen a return to dynamic growth of 4.1% in 2018. Since 2015, the government has chosen to stimulate consumption by increasing wages and reducing VAT and income tax. The Romanian economy relies heavily on the production of diversified energy - electricity, natural gas, oil - which it exports, particularly to its Eastern European neighbours.

Cultural work codes in Romania
When you arrive in Romania, you will immediately notice that the people are very hospitable. Friendly and welcoming with foreigners, Romanians are easy to make contact with. Their general proficiency in at least one foreign language - English, French or German - helps them overcome any language barriers.
Expect informal and fairly relaxed professional relationships ! There is also no great distinction made between personal and professional lives. Talking about your family, your country of origin or what brings you to Romania is a good way to break the ice with the person who you are talking to.
Romanians don’t pay much attention to punctuality or formalities, but they value relationships, including in business. Remember to maintain relationships by organising physical meetings, which are more appreciated than an email or a phone call.
Do not forget that Romanians are Latins : they are not afraid of conflict and are very passionate in their discussions. Non-verbal gestures or facial expressions, form an integral part of communicating. The best way to resolve a misunderstanding or conflict is to be polite but direct. Let the other person know unambiguously what the problem is and prepare to discuss it animatedly but without any resentment !
Things that may surprise you in Romania
- Your 5 years of Latin will finally be of use ! Knowledge of this dead language will help you a little to learn Romanian which has many similarities with Latin.
- In Romania, the Old and the New live side by side at all times, whether in architecture - medieval churches and glittering glass towers - or in society - where the generation raised under socialism and multilingual young people, who are open to the world, meet - or in the digital infrastructure - high-speed broadband versus under-performing and ageing infrastructure. It is this contrast that makes the country so charming !
- Romanian cuisine is generous, it draws on its peasant roots and has been enriched through contact with Eastern and Slavic influences. A few typical dishes ? Sarmales : stuffed cabbage or vine leaves, Ciorbă: velvety soup of vegetables and meat or the ever-present Mamaliga : better known to us as polenta.
- Romanians are very hospitable, which often means an invitation to drink tuica, the local liquor. Important : you cannot refuse a toast. A word of advice : do not drink too quickly because your host will be all too happy to offer you another one... and another one !
- Romania is also an incredible variety of landscapes : discover the Saxon towns, ski resorts and the castle of Dracula in Transylvania, the natural areas of the Danube delta, the seaside resorts of the Black Sea, primary forests and mountains that encourage hiking (but watch out for the bears who live there in large numbers !) ... Half the size of France but still little known to tourists, Romania has a lot of territory to explore !
