Cultural work codes in Malaysia

In Malaysia, be polite and patient! More comfortable with rhetorical devices than with confrontation, your counterparts will find it difficult to say no to you head-on. To understand the real intentions of Malaysians, you must learn to listen and analyse rather than to impose your own point of view. It really is a course in patience !

Whatever the ethnic origin of the person you are speaking to, you must always respect titles - Doctor, Professor, Engineer - especially if it is a prestigious title. Moreover, if this is the case, you really don't need the name of your collaborator at all, you can just use his title such as Dato', Datuk, Tan Sri or Tun.
